My guess is that the program will primarily appeal to boys. And appeal it will! It's loaded with smart graphics (in other words, it plays great on a 486), great football sounds, and realistically cliché-ridden announcers. It gives you a definite feeling of having paid a scalper 100 bucks to be there. You set your skill level and game preferences at the opening Main Menu screen. I had to select no music twice before it would finally run in that fashion. Skill level runs from 1 to 4. And, let me tell you, level TEST anyone's math intelligence to the limit. At the start of the game, and at the start of each quarter, the game runs in an arcade fashion, as you attempt to beef up certain aspects of your team. After this brief interlude, each play is then preceded by a question. The majority of the questions involve math, although there is a little NFL trivia thrown in. If you answer correctly, and if your offense and defense are nicely built up, you will probably do well on the subsequent play. I turned my eight year old nephew loose on it, to test the "kid appeal ", he stayed on it for 4 hours ! I finally had to kick him off so he could get some other homework done! He was ready to play it again the next day. I honestly feel that his math skills are perhaps a little sharper & are improving as he gains confidence. The interface is a little complicated for the average eight year old (I think), but a little coaching & playing the game isall that's needed. I like the instant appeal that this game has for the younger set. I like the fact that the math problems are made as much fun as the game itself. There are a lot of other options for the players on the CD as the game & skills progress. I don't like the convoluted steps required to complete each play. I feel that this process could have been simplified, particularly when you're aiming your product at kids. And, this program, like most others, has an occasional bug. I guess that's the price we pay for demanding lots of sound and graphics in our software. All in all, this is a fine educational tool, and I recommend it for anyone wanting to sharpen their NFL loving children's math skills.
