What do I need to get this to work with my game console instead of a wired connection so I can get my game console on-line wirelessly?
You'll need a broadband internet connection. (Cable Internet, DSL, or FIOS)
You need a wireless network in your home. This is most commonly created by a wireless router or access point. Any brand or type of wireless router will work with the WGA11B. It does not have to be a Linksys router.
You need an ethernet-ready device to connect it to. (XBOX, PS2, XBOX 360, PS3 20GB, PC, Replay TV, etc.)
Your wireless-network has to either be an open (unencrypted network) or encrypted with WEP encryption only. This adapter will not work with WPA encryption. Not sure what kind of encryption you're using? Our support site guide for this device will walk you through getting into the configuration of your router to discover these settings. You'll find our support site here.
If your network is open, it's basically just plug and play. You should follow our setup guide anyway, but it will only take a few minutes to get up and running.
If your network is WEP encrypted, you'll need to program the device to talk to your network first. The software to program the adapter runs on Windows 98se, Me, 2000, or XP. The setup software to program the device for WEP encrypted networks does not run on Vista or on MAC.
Just follow our detailed setup guide, found here.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Will this let me get on XBOX Live / Playstation Network?
Yes!
2. Does this device do the same thing as the $100 wireless adapter from company X?
Yes, with a couple of exceptions. In some ways, the WGA11B is actually better.
The majority of our customers are trying to avoid paying the ridiculous sum of $100 for the official Microsoft wireless adapter for the XBOX 360. And who can blame them? Many people have a hard time believing that this device does the same thing. The differences: The Microsoft adapter plugs into the USB port on the 360 and can be programmed through the 360 dashboard itself. It can also work with both WEP and WPA encrypted networks. Those are the pluses for that device and for some people that may be worth the extra $50+ that the official adapter costs.
The WGA11B connects to the 360 (or other devices) through the ethernet jack in the same way you'd connect a network cable. The WGA11B is basically a wireless ethernet bridge. What's that mean? Well, it allows you to connect ANY ethernet-ready device to your wireless network. So if your device has an ethernet jack, you can make it wireless. This makes the WGA11B more versatile in that you can use it with pretty much anything with a network jack. (A desktop or laptop, a game console, a Replay TV DVR, etc.) You could even plug it into a switch or hub and then connect more than one device to the switch to connect to your wireless network.
The downside of this versatility is that you cannot program the device through the 360. If you have a WEP-encrypted network you'll need to program the WGA11B through a PC first before you can connect it to your device's ethernet jack. The programming isn't difficult however, and the software for it walks you through the process. We also have a step-by-step guide on our support site that helps with this process.
Additionally, the WGA11B only supports open or WEP-encrypted networks. If you need to use WPA encryption on your network, you should probably buy the Microsoft adapter instead.
Speed. The Microsoft adapter is a wireless-G device. The WGA11B is a wireless-B device. On the surface that appears to be a pretty serious difference and many people worry about lag in on-line gameplay, and other speed-related issues. That really isn't something to worry about for most people. Playing any game on-line only requires a small amount of data to be transferred between your console and the game server. Wireless-B is more than fast enough for this. In fact, unless you are using a FIOS internet connection, the WGA11B is faster than your internet connection anyway.
Where speed might be an issue is multimedia. If you intend to use the media extender features of your 360 to watch hi-def movies, the transfer speed will be slower and movie will take longer to transfer. If you don't intend to use your 360 for that purpose, the WGA11B is more than fast enough.
3. I don't know anything about networking and this sounds too hard for me to figure out. Are you sure I can do this?
Yes. We're confident that our instructions can guide you through the setup process regardless of your level of knowledge of networking or computers. If you're concerned about being able to do it, have a look at our guide for this device on our support site first. It really just requires you to read and follow the instructions.
We've sold more than 2,000 of these adapters so far. We rarely get requests for help from our customers who take the time to read and follow our guide.
4. Does this work with the PlayStation 3 XXGB?
Only the original 20GB PS3 came without wireless built-in, and the WGA11B will certainly work with it. For all other PS3s, you already have a wireless adapter built-in to your console. If you're wondering what else you may need to connect your PS3 to the internet/Playstation Network, we recommend consulting the PS3 manual/user's guide.
5. I don't understand why this won't work with Windows Vista. What does my PC have to do with anything? I just want to use this with my XBOX?
If you're using encryption on your network, you have to program the gaming adapter before you can attach the intended device to it. To program it you'll use the included setup software that runs on a PC on your network. The setup software only works with Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, and XP. It does not work with Windows Vista or MAC. You only have to program it once, so you could always use a friend's PC to program it if you needed to.

Important: Windows Vista Users - The setup software required to configure this device for use on encrypted networks does not work properly with Windows Vista and Linksys currently has no plans to provide support for this device and Windows Vista. If you have an encrypted network and your only PC is running Windows Vista you will not be able to configure and use this device.
